Life simulators are all fun and games (literally) until you run out of inspiration for your save files. Once you’ve logged enough hours, knowing exactly what to do next can be tricky. Gameplay challenges help with exactly that by giving you some structure, while giving you the perfect opportunity to try things you don’t usually do. The Very Veggie Legacy Challenge is the newest one of these challenges, and has gotten a lot of attention over on YouTube and Reddit.
The Very Veggie Legacy Challenge is a community-made campaign created to help guide your Sims through ten generations of fun and chaos. As you might’ve guessed, you’re going to theme each generation around a different vegetable (with a few fruits chucked in for good measure), while running small businesses, raising children, and trying out everything The Sims 4 has to offer across all of its different Expansion Packs and other DLC.
Sound familiar to you? It’s a riff on the Not So Berry Legacy Challenge made by content creators LilSimsie and AlwaySimming back in 2017. The Sims community also has a long-standing history of other challenges, including the now-iconic 100 Baby Challenge and rags-to-riches challenges. In fact, the Very Veggie Legacy Challenge is kind of a riff on a classic rags-to-riches, where you cheat your Sims’ bank accounts empty and live off the land – or whatever else – the best you can. There are a few extra rules to keep in mind throughout your legacy, though.
What are the rules for the Very Veggie Legacy Challenge?
A staple of the challenge is that the rules change for every generation. This is a pretty common part of any multi-generation challenge, as it helps to keep your saves fresh and interesting. But, you do need to keep a few things in mind throughout:
- Your first Sim (known as your founder) needs to be a Young Adult.
- Every Sim must be themed around their assigned vegetable and have whatever traits the guide sets out for them.
- Move your first generation into an empty lot. Keep in mind that you can always bulldoze somewhere for them if you already have somewhere in mind!
- The only time you can cheat is right at the start when you rinse your Sim of all their Simoleons.
- Every part of the challenge has to be checked off by the correct generation before they die.
Beyond that, each generation has specific rules and goals. You can find a full breakdown of the rules here in the original document.
Do I need specific packs to complete the challenge?
Yes and no. The standard version of the challenge sets out loads of goals that require particular DLC, including Game Packs and Kits like Bust the Dust. Don’t fret, though – you absolutely don’t need everything to complete the challenge.
There’s an alternate set of rules that sets out how to play the challenge with only Base Game, meaning that you can technically play it completely for free. Have some DLC but not others? You can also swap out some rules for their Base Game equivalent while keeping others in. And, there are a few suggested swaps, too.
Anything else I need to know?
That’s pretty much everything! But, there are a couple of other things to keep in mind while you grow your vegetable patch– I mean, family.
There’s a super useful spreadsheet that helps you to keep track of the rules alongside your progress, which you can find here. It’s basically the same as the document, but it’s a bit easier to dip into as you play. If you’re uber-organised, then another creator called Rosannatxt has also made a Notion template for keeping on top of things.
One more thing is that if you’re a Sims creator yourself – maybe you like sharing builds and Sims to EA’s galleries, or stream over on Twitch – then there’s some stuff for you to check out as well. The last page of the document shares how to credit the challenge in your content and how to find other Simmers’ creations for the challenge.
