Customising Create-a-Sim in The Sims 2? Careful you don’t accidentally murder your Sim

If you played The Sims 2 much back in the day, you probably know that you can customise almost anything. What you probably don’t know, however, is that doing so could lead to your Sim’s untimely demise.

So untimely, in fact, that you haven’t even finished making them yet. And I’m not talking about your PC crashing before you exit Create-a-Sim. I’m talking about a type of custom content that triggers a bug, revealing a really weird workaround that was used while designing The Sims 2.

Simmers keep accidentally killing their Sims with custom content

One popular way of subtly altering The Sims 2 (and a bunch of other Sims titles) is by customising how Create-a-Sim looks. Sometimes this involves switching out the wallpaper, while other times it can include creating an entirely new backdrop.

It makes sense to switch it up – you can spend a really long time in Create-a-Sim, after all. But, if you do that, you’re going to find yourself on a timed mission to make the best Sim you can without them dropping dead in front of your eyes.

Let’s just say it’s a rather tight timer.

Why does this happen?

Create-a-Sim in The Sims 2 is technically a roofless building. That means that if you have The Sims 2: Seasons or The Sims 2: Legacy Edition installed, they’re also going to be exposed to the elements while you faff around trying to pick the perfect outfit.

Which, in my experience, is an incredibly long task, as almost all of the clothes included in The Sims 2 are ugly. Best hope my Sims are good at dealing with the cold.

Although the “roofless building” theory answers one question – why it happens – it also raises so many more. Why are Sims being built in a room somewhere, instead of off in the ether? Are we all just playing Frankenstein with them?

I don’t know. But it’s weird. And creepy.
