Sims FreePlay is getting more updates, will it clash with Project Rene?

While we may’ve been talking about Project Rene recently, it’s worth noting that The Sims already has a presence on mobile. And, now, the Sims Freeplay is getting more updates, but will it clash with Project Rene? If so, who’s getting the axe…?

Big additions

The two most recent additions were of course, that of Enhanced Lighting to brighten up your Sims FreePlay experience and the new Spring to Life season that let them revamp and redesign a rustic farmhouse as a family home. Not to mention the recently-passed Journey to the Midwest event that further focused on your house-flipping fantasies!

It’s especially notable that Sims FreePlay is still getting these updates on a consistent basis considering it’s well over a decade old at this point. But if you’re like me you might also be wondering where it’ll stand with the in-development Project Rene.

A newer model

Now, it’s tempting to take the more sceptical viewpoint and say that Project Rene will supersede The Sims FreePlay. But I think these updates, especially the decision to overhaul the lighting system, indicates that FreePlay is intended to be supported for a long while yet.

All of which further complicates the picture of what Project Rene will be. Because if it wants to be a mobile-focused version of the Sims, surely FreePlay already does that…?

I think that we can anticipate this’ll mean that Project Rene will diverge significantly from the Sims FreePlay, and also that we can expect further updates and overhauls. In fact I’d wager that we’ll soon be looking at a proper graphical update, if not this year then in 2026.

Well, either way, we’ll just have to wait and see whether it will clash with Project Rene. Hopefully 2025 will shape up to be a big year for FreePlay updates, and we might see even more systems receiving revamps and overhauls too!
