Sims trailblazer Tim LeTourneau passes way

Tim LeTourneau, a significant producer and ‘game maker’,  has passed away. He was a key player in the Sims franchise, having produced a huge number of titles including The Sims 1, The Sims 2, and MySims.

LeTourneau’s impact on The Sims

LeTourneau is credited with various production roles throughout the history of The Sims, dating back to the franchise’s origins. He was an associate producer for both SimCity 3000 and The Sims 1. After that, he continued to produce main series titles, Expansion Packs, and spin-offs MySims and SimAnimals.

His contributions to The Sims don’t stop at being a producer, either. In a recently highlighted interview for GamesBeat, he shared his early experiences as a producer and designer at Maxis. He started out with these positions, before he became a general manager at the studio.

Six months before the release of The Sims 1, he joined the team as a producer. Then, he was involved with most titles up until his departure from Maxis in the early 2010s. He worked in production or as a senior producer for key DLC like Vacation, Hot Date, and Unleashed. These Expansions had a huge impact on the series, adding features which are tough to imagine The Sims without now.

He’s even credited as a voice actor for both The Sims: House Party and The Sims: Makin’ Magic, which he provided Simlish dialogue for. After LeTourneau’s work on the franchise during its’ early days, he continued to make significant contributions to the next two generations, working on The Sims 2 and The Sims 3.

News of LeTourneau’s passing has also been shared on r/TheSims. A tribute was shared by one of his hires, praising his contributions to the franchise and his commitment to supporting others at the studio. One section of the tribute reads:

Tim contributed to not only the production, but the design of the game. The real beauty of The Sims was always the commitment to inclusiveness, openness, and the humanity of not only our simulated people, but the real ones who bring them to life. It’s difficult to keep such projects true their original vision and free of the worst impulses of corporate owned game development and as a producer Tim was the best there has ever been. He was mentor to a lucky few, was a friend to a great many, a leader for thousands, and a champion for millions of gamers.
