What are Imaginary Friends in The Sims and why are they so creepy?

Everyone has reacted with excitement over Adventure Awaits, an expansion pack with a lot of exciting updates. But nobody seems to be talking about one part of the trailer that hints at something quite horrifying: the return of the Imaginary Friend.

In the Adventure Awaits trailer, we see a quick glimpse at this disturbing feature. A dorky kid at summer camp cuddles with his seemingly normal Chuckie-like ginger doll. He then selects “Turn Into Imaginary Friend” and turns his summer away into a nightmare.

After selecting the seemingly innocent button, the doll turns into a disgusting, life-size version of the doll – complete with an upsetting smile, Big Bird-like lumpy legs, and no pants.

What is an Imaginary Friend in Sims?

Amidst the fun summer camp activities and Camp Director roles, Adventure Awaits appears to mark the return of Imaginary Friends after over a decade of being Imaginary Friend-free.

Imaginary Friend made its disgusting debut in The Sims 3. Back then, they were still not very cute, but not as horrific as the freak in the Adventure Awaits trailer. Imaginary Friends were a gift from Grandma, arriving along with children who were just born or adopted. Child Sims could play with these weirdos to form a relationship with it, allowing the creature to grow larger and move around the house like a horror movie reincarnate.

What was even worse, Imaginary Friends would go from a secret friend of the child to a full-blown member of the household. They could even grow up and marry the child once they are both adults. Why?

Why?

It’s unclear how the Imaginary Friend will work in The Sims 4, but we can see quite clearly that it’s hideous. Only time will tell if the Imaginary Friend will look, behave, or function. The new expansion is going live in September 10th.
