With all the news about Adventure Awaits, it seems there’s still older mechanics players are fuzzy on. Case in point, the latest topic to cross my desk regarding roommates. What are they? Who are they? Why are they? Do they pay rent? Well, the last one is an easy answer: yes they do.
But what are they good for? Well, that’s more difficult to answer.
Like friends, but worse
Roommates are part of the Discover University expansion pack and most of the time will be found in University Housing. Rather than being playable, they’ll have their own personalities and activities. Whether that’s being an ideal pal or a complete nightmare to live with.
Your Sim can also set up rooms to let with the Residential Rental lot assignment. You can two to six rental units, and they don’t actually need to be connected. So if you dream of being the ultimate landlord (you monster), you can create your own mini apartment complex, or annexes to house your Sim renters.

Rent’s due: Do roommates pay rent in The Sims 4?
Yes! Now, outside of the basics, there are some things to keep in mind.
You’ll set rent and lease length when you initially advertise a place and can adjust them later. You can also ban certain activities and set rules for what Sims can and can’t do. Beware though, if they get too grumpy they’ll set up a protest.
And if you think you can pull the ol’ one-two and just kick them out an unjust eviction can be grounds for a hefty fine.
Ultimately, unlike setting up your own business I can’t advise either way on whether this is a ‘fast track’ method to getting cash. It’s efficient, yes but it would seem to me that it’s a lot easier to pursue your own path to Simoleons (maybe hold out for that lottery win?). It’s a big investment to set up rental units; even more so if you want them to actually look good.
But renting can be fun for setting up interesting living situations though, so it’s well worth looking into.
