In The Sims 4, every Sim that players create will be able to develop their own set of skills, hobbies, and interests. These aspects can influence potential career paths, social behaviours, and the ways that your Sim tends to spend their downtime.
One area that is a potential avenue for Sims to explore is their musical creativity, with many different options such as playing instruments, listening to music created by other performing Sims, and even writing their own songs. If you’re wondering how to write a song in The Sims 4, all relevant information has been included in the guide below.
How to write a song on guitar in The Sims 4

To write songs in The Sims 4, players will first need to ensure they have at least one instrument that can be accessed within their Sims household. Options include guitars, pianos, violins, and more.
Once this has been sorted, you will then need to improve a Sim’s musical skill proficiency by spending time interacting and practising with their instrument. To do this, select the Sim that you would like to eventually write their own songs, then click on the instrument and select ‘Practice’ from the list of options on the menu.
After spending a certain amount of time practising their instrument, your Sim will go up a level in their musical instrument progression. As they reach each new level/stage of progression, new options will become available for your Sim to utilise with their instrument, such as performing songs and learning new genres.
To write a song, your Sim will need to reach proficiency Level 8 with their instrument of choice. Once you have reached this level, you will see a new option when selecting the instrument and opening the menu titled ‘Write Song.’

Players will then have the option to write one of several different song choices, with each one offering a unique sound from the others. Following your selection, your Sim will then begin the activity.
However, because songwriting can be quite a time-consuming task, Sims may be interrupted by their needs. In the case that this occurs, you may be able to find a half-completed song in your Sim’s inventory. They can then choose to scrap the song or continue writing it.
How to write a smash hit in The Sims 4
If your Sim has also reached progression Level 9 with their instrument, they can choose to license songs that they have written. Sims can license one written song per instrument each in-game Sims week. Your Sim will earn royalties from their licensed music, which can be a nice way to earn a bit of bonus cash.
That’s everything you need to know about how to write songs in The Sims 4.
