Sims 4 players are sick of the game’s ugly clothing

There are a lot of different ways of playing The Sims. You can play architect while constructing all kinds of incredible venues, or become a fairy and wreak havoc on the neighbourhood. But, no matter how you play, you’re going to want to make sure your Sim looks fantastic while doing so. You’ll spend a lot of time looking at them, after all.

Hell, Create-a-Sim might even be your favourite part of Simming. It’s easy to spend hours making minute tweaks to your tiny pixellated people, making them try on hundreds of different outfits in the process.

The only problem with this is that some of the clothes you have to rifle through are absolutely ugly. At least, that’s what some of the fanbase thinks. I’d be lying if I said I couldn’t see why. Particularly when some Create-a-Sim items aren’t even quality assured properly, leading to appalling issues like makeup swatches not being compatible with all skintones.

Some clothes in The Sims are just outright weird

A quick search of ‘ugly’ in r/Sims4, a fan subreddit for the game, brings up more than a few threads bemoaning the state of fashion in the life sim. All kinds of reasons are cited. Patterns clash with everything, colours and shades can’t be matched together, and there are just too many niche items.

You mean you can’t figure out a use for the pegasus llama mascot costume? Sounds like a skill issue to me – it’s obviously the perfect thing to wear to a wedding…

A wedding in The Sims 4 with loads of Sims wearing bad outfits: A faba Young Adult is walking around in heels and a crop top, a bridge is wearing an ugly gown and bad makeup, a Pancakes Young Adult is smelly in the foreground wearing a pinafore, and another Sim has a mullet and swimwear on while he dances.

One thread highlights a specific problem I’ve really noticed while mucking around in Create-a-Sim. The number of times an item of black clothes is actually some shade of grey. Can’t a Sim goth out in peace?

At least it’s realistic, I guess. I know that no two of my black t-shirts are the same in real life, either.

Can we custom content our way out of this one?

Yes and no.

On one hand, there are loads of incredible custom content creators out there who are enhancing The Sims with their fun, themed outfits and cool accessories. With so much to choose from, and it being so easy to load custom content into your game, there’s bound to be stuff out there that fits your tastes.

On the other hand, some of the problems with Create-a-Sim should be addressed on an official level. In my experience, some clothes in The Sims 4 don’t look ugly until you try them on and realise they don’t fit your Sim’s frame at all.

For instance, larger Sims will clip through certain items with fuller skirts or flared tops, making the items look completely broken. I can just about tolerate some garish pants or a weird hat, but nothing looks more ugly than exclusionary jank.
