Can you play The Sims 4 on Mac?

A woman in a lab coat stands in front of a robot who's sat up in surprise as if they've just been activated.

I used to wonder why people preferred Mac to PC, but after experiencing the ‘joys’ of Windows updates over the years I think I’ve started to come around.

But that’s not what this article is about. Instead we’re covering the simple question of whether you can play The Sims 4 on Mac.

Make mine EA

In brief, yes you can! But the longer answer is that unfortunately you can’t play it via Steam but only via the EA App. Then again if you’re a frequent gamer on Mac you’re probably well used to workarounds and awkward support by now. And aside from that it’s pretty much the same installation and same game as you’re used to.

Reviews for The Sims 4 on Mac seem to be broadly positive, and even as a PC user I’d be loathe to deny that Apple packs a mighty punch with their hardware. The cost and various gubbins are another matter, but anyway, I digress.

You can also technically play via Xbox Game Pass, but you’d need to use that in a browser on Mac, so it seems a little more trouble than it’s worth.

Any other business?

As for other information you might want to know, as far as my research informed me there’s no major differences between the Mac and PC versions of The Sims 4. Mods are fully supported; although there are the occasional growing pains since they work a little different to the mainline PC version.

Other than that, if you’re planning on jumping into The Sims 4 for the first time then you don’t need to worry about there being much of a difference when playing on Mac. However, general consensus seems to be that that hardware with the new M4 chip is the preferable option; if you can afford it.

In the meantime speaking of mods, if you need a basic overview of how to get started with that, why not check out our guide to modding The Sims?
